6 Healthy Snack Ideas For Those With Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 Diabetes patients know that part of having a smart strategy in place to control blood sugar levels involves planning snacks accordingly. Snacks should be considered miniature meals and carbs should always be taken into consideration. The ideal snacks for Type 2 Diabetics have a good mix of fiber, protein, and fat to help stave off hunger and keep blood sugar levels even all day.

Here are some fantastic snack ideas for type 2 diabetics. You won’t be left feeling hungry, nor will your energy levels drop. They’re the ideal snacks to keep your blood sugar levels well-balanced.

1. Cheese

There’s nothing easier to take on the go with you than a stick of cheese. String cheese, for example, is individually wrapped and makes a great low carb snack that can be combined with cold cuts as well. Most all cheeses are very low in carbs, including cheddar, jack, Swiss and even Gouda.

 

2. Nuts

Nuts are a power-packed snack, and they are low in carbs and high in protein and healthy fats that support ketosis. Almonds and peanuts are known to limit the spike in blood sugar that comes after eating, and they also do a great job of keeping you fuller for longer. One thing that you need to be careful of with this snack, though, is the portion. They are both calorie-dense, so your snack should be limited to just a small handful.

 

3. Cucumbers & Greek Yogurt

All you need is a half-cup of plain full-fat Greek yogurt and cucumber slices. Cucumbers have virtually no carbs and are hydrating and packed full of antioxidants. Not only do they help lower blood pressure levels, but they don’t increase blood sugar. They’re the perfect type 2 diabetic snack.

 

4. Egg Salad

A hard-boiled egg is the ideal protein punch, and they’re easy to take on the go but. Simply mash that egg up and add a teaspoon of mayo and you have a delicious snack to accompany you anywhere. You can eat the egg salad over cucumber slices or if your carb limit allows, a slice of low carb whole-grain bread.

 

5. Berry Smoothie

Berries are the lowest carb fruit, and they are packed with essential antioxidants. As snacks should be less than 150 calories, it can be challenging to create a smoothie that meets the requirements. Don’t worry, though, because all you need to do is keep track of your ingredients and measure them. You could also add a bit of protein powder to it for a boost.

When making a smoothie, you can add ice to it so that it thickens (or freeze all of your fruits). For this smoothie, you’ll need 1 cup of berries, and half a cup of ultra-filtered milk, which has half the sugar of regular milk. It’s delicious and you can enjoy it knowing it’s a healthful type 2 diabetes snack.

 

6. Flaxseed Crackers

There are also flaxseed crackers available that are very much like grain crackers but have zero carbs. These are ideal to go with cheeses, egg, or chicken salad, cold cuts or on their own as they come in various flavors.
